Despite its traditional look, Laphroaig has long been a forward-thinking distillery, bottling its whisky as a single malt as early as the 1920s—a rare move for a heavily peated whisky at the time. Laphroaig also played a key role in shaping modern whisky production by adopting ex-bourbon casks, adding signature sweetness to its intense, smoky spirit, and made history in 1954 by appointing Scotland’s first female distillery manager, Bessie Williamson.
Launched in April 2012 as a travel retail exclusive, Laphroaig PX Cask showcases the distillery’s innovative cask management. This Islay single malt is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels, quarter casks, and is finished in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks, from which it takes its name. The result is a deeply complex whisky with a rich, peaty foundation, balanced by the luscious sweetness of sherry and oak. The PX casks contribute notes of raisins, dates, and dark chocolate, beautifully complementing the intense smoke, iodine, and seaweed flavors Laphroaig is known for.
