While Japanese whisky is often compared to Scotch whisky, they are not the same. Japanese whisky is made using a similar production process as Scotch whisky, which involves distilling malted barley and other grains, aging the spirit in oak casks, and blending different batches together to create a desired flavor profile.

However, there are some differences between the two. For example, the climate in Japan is generally warmer and more humid than in Scotland, which can affect how the whisky ages and develops its flavor. Additionally, Japanese whisky producers often use a variety of cask types, including ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, to impart different flavors and aromas to the whisky.

Overall, while Japanese whisky and Scotch whisky share some similarities in terms of production, they each have their own unique flavor profiles and characteristics.

In a move set to shake up the Japanese whisky industry, the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association has announced new regulations to combat the problem of falsely labeled "Japanese whisky." We from LICQOR by Nine has welcomed the change, which aims to bring Japanese whisky standards in line with those of other countries. With stricter guidelines, the industry will have to adhere to rules on what can be considered "Japanese whisky," from the ingredients used to where it is bottled. These changes are set to revolutionize the Japanese whisky market and bring authenticity and quality to the forefront.

Single malt whisky is produced at a single distillery using 100% malted barley, while single grain whisky is produced at a single distillery using wheat or unmalted barley. Blended malt whisky is a blend of multiple single malt whiskies from either the same or different distilleries, while blended grain whisky is a blend of multiple single grain whiskies from either the same or different distilleries. Blended malt and grain whisky is a blend of both malt and grain whiskies. The terms "pure malt" and "vatted malt" are historical classifications that refer to blended malt whisky.

Japanese whisky can be consumed in many ways, depending on personal preference. Here are some common ways to enjoy Japanese whisky:

Neat: This means drinking the whisky at room temperature without any added mixers or water. This allows the full flavor profile of the whisky to be experienced.

On the rocks: Adding a few ice cubes to the whisky can help to open up the flavors and aromas, while also chilling the drink.

Highball: A popular way to enjoy Japanese whisky is to mix it with soda water and ice, which creates a refreshing and easy-to-drink cocktail.

Cocktail: Japanese whisky can also be used as a base spirit in a variety of cocktails, such as a whisky sour or old fashioned.

Ultimately, the way you choose to enjoy Japanese whisky is up to you. Whether you prefer it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, the important thing is to savor and appreciate the unique and exceptional flavor profile of this premium spirit.
